Zen Painting

The Japanese art of sumi-e is the technique that uses Zen painting to express the inner life. Its practice implies a conscious attitude that renders the mind serene, enabling us to encounter a space for tranquillity, creativity and sensitivity, and reflect the constant transformation of our vital nature.

This book, with its simple, poetic language, offers us clear insights into the main aspects of Zen painting  and the sumi-e method. Its pages provide us with a detailed description of the materials used (ink block, stone ink wells, bamboo brushes and fibre paper) and show us the different brush strokes and the particular techniques of the four honourable gentlemen: the bamboo, the plum tree, the chrysanthemum and the wild orchid, with the noble aim of finding a path to express our creativity, enjoying the spontaneity and fluency of painting.  

About the author:

Maria Eugenia Manrique has a degree in Fine Arts. For more than 25 years she has dedicated herself to the plastic arts and to teaching. In 1990 she obtained the Bronze Prize award in painting at the Osaka International Triennial in Osaka, Japan. She is teaches at the Escola d'Expressio i Psicomotricitat Carme Aymerich in Barcelona, Spain, giving classes in plastic arts for the development of creativity.
