For decades now, the subject of shamanism has attracted great interest both from the scientific community and the non-specialist general public. From the seventies onwards a type of popular Western neo-shamanism began to emerge and spread, normally associated with the personal growth movements.

The present book provides an up-to-date review of the basic concepts of the phenomenon, of the shamanic role, and the mental, cultural, cognitive and therapeutic phenomena that underlie this archetype. It is also a lucid critique, not exempt of irony regarding some of the versions of neoshamanism and the supermarket shelves of belief that modern Western society has effectively become.
