In the same way as the Buddha Shakyamuni put forward the teachings of the sutras, it is traditionally believed that Padmasambhava –prince, scholar, magician, illuminated being and introducer of Buddhism in Tibet– disseminated the doctrine of the tantras. This book develops certain historical and religious aspects of this trascendental spiritual Master and clarifies misunderstood elements in Buddhist teachings. Hence, as well as exposing the philosophical root of every meditation technique -analyzing, for instance, the different concepts of emptiness, the purpose and meaning of Meditating Tantric Deities or the contemplation of the true nature of the mind–, this book presents a trustworthy study of dzogchen  –or Great Perfection–, the instructions which, according to some Masters, are the peak of Buddhist contemplation and have only recently begun to be public in the West. This book also records the legendary origin of Tantric teachings, the way in which the first instructions on dzogchen were transmited and offers an explanation of the «spiritual treasures» (termas), a collection of doctrinal texts and sacred objects, concealed by certain Masters in the dawn of Buddhism and which have slowly been unveiled through the centuries, until the present day.

This study is enriched withextensive data which will be of great use for the specialist. Nevertheless, the clear and concise presentation make it equally suitable for all those who, beyond trends and fashions, are interested in acquiring a profound knowledge in Buddhism.

Fernando Mora has studied Tibetan Buddhism with different teachers for many years. At the moment he is pursuing his studies and meditation techniques in the Nyingma School, supervised by S.S. Senphen Dawa Rinpoche.
