About the book:
In Search of Progress and Equilibrium
Experiments in economic development in India
For the past decades, economists from different countries have kept a close watch on the development policies and initiatives introduced by the different governments of the state of Kerala, in south east India. This interest has been attracted by the relatively high standard of living attained by this largely non-industrialised region. In fact, if Kerala were an independent state, it would be the ninth poorest country in the world. Notwithstanding, its social achievements can be compared to many developed countries with income levels ten or twenty times higher. How can this be explained?
Research carried out by professor Sanjay Peters offers an exhaustive analysis of the Kerala model, teasing out the various factors that have made this possible and looking into its potential for development.
