This Present God
Original title:
El Dios presente. Confesiones de un viejo cristiano
About the book:
This Present God
Confessions of an old Christian
A book that will interest both liberal Catholics and the stubbornly agnostic
El Dios presente [This Present God] consists of a series of enquiries into faith, love, the revolutionary message of Jesus, the crisis in the Catholic church, religion and science, eternity and God. The author takes as his starting point the beliefs taught in a Jesuit school and brings them into line with the faith that inspires him. Written in exquisite, readable style, not without its touches of humour, these “confessions”, with their scholarly and rigorous insights laced with autobiographical anecdotes, set out to apply intelligence to the following tasks: to close the gap between Christianity and the postulates of science, argue for genuine ecumenical dialogue with the other religious traditions and return to the message of a Jesus of Nazareth different from the figure traditionally presented by the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
About the author:
José Antonio Gonzalez Casanova is one of the most lucid and interesting – and yet neglected – of present-day Spanish thinkers. He took part in the drafting of the Spanish constitution and the statutes of the constituent nations of the Spanish state. He is uniquely interesting in uniting his radical left-wing views with his profound Christian spirituality, a far cry from Vatican ideology.
